Don’t worry, I am not the preaching type. I just wanted to shed some light on the topic and how I became a grass eater.
I was pretty much a caveman for most of my existence to date. There were days that I could just go through one bacon sandwich after another.
At first I was probably influenced by a partner of mine. She was borderline vegetarian when I met her and then went full blown vegan. I remember when dinner times came about, she would randomly make ‘moo’ sounds or whisper ‘help me’ in a baby lambs voice as I would take a bite into that juicy piece of flesh, haha.
When the comedy sketch had finished, she would then ask me ‘Why do you eat meat?’. My answer was simply that I like the taste. But yet again she responded with ‘But don’t you like animals?’. The first thing that crossed my mind was ‘Yes, but I am not eating my dog!’ haha. (But i did not say this, sometimes I can hold my tongue)
It is funny that there are so many meat eating animal lovers out there. One of the big hypocrisies I encounter on a day to day basis when meeting friends or people.
Being a vegetarian is also a big plus when you go hiking, good luck packing a chicken in your bag and then choosing to eat it 4 or 5 days down the line. If you do, you might not come back from the wild at all, or maybe you have gone a bit wild and are roaming the forest with a high sweat, haha.
I suppose I was fast-tracked to becoming a vegetarian while I was with her as she quite knowledgeable on the topic. Plus it made it a bit easier at meal times instead of making 2 different meals or me eating a chicken leg in the cupboard, haha.
But at the end of the day it takes two to tango and I am not forced into something that I don’t want to do. I still needed to be open minded and willing to change my eating habits and opinion on this growing trend on caring for animals and the environment.
This led onto the binge watching of documentaries such as Earthlings, Cowspiracy and numerous others. Netflix is a good source of food documentaries or you can just google them. They are definitely eye opening and if you are not affected or take note then you most likely have a screw loose.
Mainly I am vegetarian today because of the animal rights. It is hard for me to justify eating meat if I like and care about animals. Maybe if we were to name all the animals like Bob and Dave then maybe people would think twice before eating Dave on the Sunday roast, haha.
However, saying that, I do cheat every blue moon with fish sushi. OMG, sinner!!! Burn him, burn him…. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite, but it is my most favorite dish in the world. Yet again, I am still doing more than most people out there so I don’t have too much of a guilty conscious.
If everybody changed their eating habits one way or another, maybe the sushi restaurant chains would make more of an effort when it comes to vegetarian sushi. Who wants avocado and cucumber sushi, mmmm yummy.
When it comes to eating a vegetarian diet it is relatively easy. There are so many meat alternatives out there, or maybe just eat what the farmers grow. Gothenburg is quite a progressive city so there is no shortage of substitutes or like minded people who can recommend meals etc.
There has been real movement in recent years when it comes to vegetarians and vegans. They are no longer seen as outcasts or tree huggers, they are normal people like you and me. Most of them anyway, haha, maybe just a view of them I would keep a close eye on, haha.
Restaurants in general are still behind the curve when it comes to choosing a a green friendly meal. Unless you like your pasta dishes or a good old fashioned salad. But if you go to a vegetarian/vegan specific restaurant, no problems here unless you have somekind of an allergy, but that is a whole different ball game.
If you research, you can pretty much live a healthy lifestyle if not healthier life if you stick to plant based diet. Maybe there are a few vitamins you miss out on, but they can be supplemented with a couple of pills. Look at me, I am still living and breathing and can continue to do a fairly active job and lifestyle.
The one thing I would like to get better at is maybe look at the way we can treat the environment better. Eating habits are definitely a major contribution to how the worlds climate is today. I suppose this is when vegans come in to play. I am not quite there as I love my cheese too much and indulge in a Ben and Jerry’s from time to time. But who knows, down the line I might see the light and go full green warrior.
I hope you appreciate my words, I am always here if anybody wants to have a chat about it.
Take care of yourselves and don’t forgot about our fellow animal companions.
