New Year, same problems.
Don’t be judgmental of the title, it is not as bad as it sounds, haha.
What is Jamie banging on about now? you may ask…
As the pandemic continues to drag out, I am starting to feel like I am part of ‘The Truman Show’, haha.
I have not seen my family for more than a year now, the longest period of time throughout my 33 years on this planet. The endless video chats, text messages, good job we have technology in that sense. I think my thumbs have turned into pancakes with all the typing, haha.
My normal circle of friends are skeptical with meeting up, no fault of their own. We have to be respectful of each other’s boundaries and what we are comfortable with.
Wear a bubble suit, a boiler suit/gas mask if you must, these are strange times that we are living in. Perfectly normal to be seen in a Halloween costume nowadays to see a friend or family member, haha.
In Sweden, there are some rules to curb the spread, but I suppose these are very much relaxed when compared to other countries. Are we lucky? In a way I suppose we are, have we become a little arrogant with our privileges, I will let you think for yourself on that one.
How has it been for you?
I have had my fair share of days when it feels like ground hog day. All work and no play make Jamie a dull boy. All work and no play make Jamie a dull boy. All work and no play make Jamie a dull boy, haha.
I have worked by myself for many months now. Those ‘Fika’ breaks at work have turned into long discussions with the toilet mirror and part taking in musical chairs at the office by myself, haha. Winner every time.
My jokes are constantly getting laughed at, me, myself and I are having a blast, haha.
If you are experiencing loneliness or do not know what to do, use this time to reach out to people who you have not spoken to for a while, you might be surprised about the results. By that I mean they might want to hang out with you, haha. If they do not, at least you have tried, on too many occasions I think we are scared about reaching out first and testing the water.
If you haven’t been doing so already, use this new found time to start a hobby, learn a course. It is a great opportunity to self-develop, keep the mind stimulated. Luckily we have the internet, there is plenty of material out there for free. Do not just scroll on the phone and see what other people are doing. Be happy with what you are comfortable with doing and can do.
Try and find something to be grateful for. I am no expert, but I try my best and this is something I am constantly working on.
I myself have started a mindfulness course, learning the guitar and activities I have not done before. Will I be the next Jimi Hendrix? probably not, but it is fun giving it a go.
If you want to check out some online courses, here is a couple of websites:
Of course there are plenty of other websites out there, but these are reasonably priced, or even free. Does that make them worthwhile and fulfilling, who knows, haha. But worth a try!!!
Lucky enough I still have a job and I feel for the people who are struggling to make ends meet. So I have to be careful with what I complain about, I am grateful for my situation and do not take it for granted or maybe I have.
If sitting inside has become too much to handle, or that you are staring into a computer while working from home, then go outside for a walk (If you are allowed). People watch, listen to the sounds around you, this in itself can be entertainment. Get a telescope and spy on your neighbors, oops, I mean stare at the starry sky at night, haha.
On the weekend it feels like everyone has become a hardcore walker. It seems like we are all hanging out together unintentionally, there is a constant conga line in the parks around Gothenburg. All that is missing is one of those portable stereo systems on somebody’s shoulder.
I am grateful with having a car, so that I can go for a drive somewhere to change the scenery. Either it be for a walk out in the beautiful Swedish nature, a walk along the coast or to stop by a random town. If you want to get out the city for a bit, give me a shout, I am more than willing to show some areas of interest to me. Unfortunately you have to be Gothenburg based, my generosity knows some bounds, haha.
In a way, I am happy that I am not spending every Friday/Saturday night sitting down at a bar spending my well earned cash. Well earned cash might be a little exaggerated, haha. However, that is not to say that I do not miss the odd after work.
I believe when restrictions get lifted again, I will be more careful with my alcohol consumption. Not that I have a problem with the nectar of the gods, but I am appreciating the time I have off more and more and should be more productive with it.
Instead I am trying to be more careful with what I spend my money on. Yes ok, I was a sucker for buying a new TV in the Black Friday last year, but I will not beat myself over that one, haha. Netflix has been getting a hammering from time to time, and I do love myself a movie on the big screen. I miss the cinema and fighting alongside The Transformers or being confused by another Christopher Nolan movie, haha.
But it is not all doom and gloom…
The days are getting brighter and the days are getting longer. Unfortunately they are not getting warmer here just yet, haha. I can’t remember the last time I could feel my toes, I suppose I should really check that out.
There also seems to be light at the end of the tunnel with these vaccinations, lets hope all this carrot dangling comes to an end soon.
So that we are able to see our family, friends and do the stuff again that we enjoy and took for granted. Will it be the same like before, only time will tell, but changes were needed and we will have to embrace them.
